It was wednesday afternoon at my High School. It had a festive atmosphere because that day….was
Valentine’s Day.
Fellow Toastmasters & dear guests,
Do you remember your first Valentine day? Do you remember your first crush? Do you remember your first proposal that you could never say out of Fear.
Today you are going to learn a very powerful tool of how to overcome your fear.
Nlw Let me take you to my class at my High school.
I was 16 years old.
I was one of those guys who sat in the first row and complete all assignment before time.
I was one of those guys who was were teacher’s favourite.
I was one of those guys whom your friends said not to mingle otherwise you will become nerd.
To sum it up, I was like this –
Don’t you think it is weird that a moment comes in a person’s life where suddenly miracle happens.
Well that moment for me was when a ‘Hot girl’ walked into my class. Her name was ‘Alisha Sharma’
That day, she wore red salwar, walked with a twinkle in her eye, and her skin radiated like radium .
When she walked, her hair bounced and my heart pumped.
At that moment I suddenly transformed from a merd in to a super hero like this –
At that moment I realized that chemistry between oxygen and carbon was less interesting than chemistry between a boy and a girl.
I walked towards Alisha and said, ‘hi’. I was standing like a zombie so she started laughing.
Do you know what is the first first signal to continuing flirting with a girl? Check if she is laughing. And she did. And then we started whatsapping, talking on phone and soon it ended in long calls.
So you must be thinking, what’s the problem.
The guy likes the girl, and the girl likes the guy and the girl like another guy.
Another guy, yes you heard it right.
Alisha came to me and said ‘Prateek, I have a crush on a guy. I asked ‘Who is he’? She said is ‘Mystery guy’. He is
- Tall
- Handsome
- Funny
I imagined this mystery guy to be like this –
Okay, I knew I wasn’t tall, I wasn’t handsome and….<pause> I wasn’t funny.
But I was
- smart,
- cute
- short
I imagine myself to be like this –
But I did not want to give up. Before my crush turns into another person love, I decided to purse a project.
Title of the project was ‘Mission Alisa’.
Timing: ‘Valentine day’
Objective :‘ ‘Control nervousness’,’Use proper eye contact’, ‘Persuade her to come out on a date’.
It was wednesday afternoon at my High School. It had a festive atmosphere because that day….was
Valentine’s Day.
Operation Alisha was on full swing.
I saw her standing at the corner
As I walked towards her, I heard a voice in my head, it said…
Hey, I don’t think we can do this…
Are you really gonna do this, what if she says no?
As I got closer to her, the voice got stronger and it said…
Are you out of your my mind?
What are you doing?
You are going to jeopardize your friendship..
She will never talk to you.
Don’t do this.
STOP & i stopped and stood like a statue.
There was a mental war going in my mind. My heart was pounding and my palms were sweating and I was scared.
But haven’t we all felt like that?
Perhaps on the first day of the job or perhaps when you were entering the examination hall or perhaps when you were giving your first speech.
To overcome my fear I used a powerful tool.
I closed my eyes & took a deep breath & asked myself ‘why I was doing it?’
Alisha was insanely hot, I had a huge crush on her and I don’t want to leave her to some mystery guy because I am the guy for her.
The first step is the hardest step and I took the first step and I said
“Hey Alisha, do you want to go out on a date with me?” (use a rose)
No matters what happens, whatever be the result or whatever people think.
Just Do it .
If you want to write your speech but you’re scared to do it. Just Do it .
If you want to sing but scared of what will people think.Just Do it .
My point is “Don’t wait for things to happen to you – just go out & do it anyway”. (specific purpose)
Well the story isn’t over yet.
You must be thinking what did Alisha said?
She said “Yes”
But now you must be thinking what happened to that mystery guy?
A week later after our first kiss, I asked her “who was that mystery guy,”.
& she replied “Prateek, you are clueless. you just don’t get it. You are the Mystery guy”
& on hearing this, I smiled.
Thank You!
Over to you Mr Toastmaster.
P.S – This is my speech, Project 8 ‘Use visual aid’ from Competent Communicator Manual of Toastmasters International.
